Rest day in Nong Khai

Apart from being the gateway to Vientiane  in Laos, Nong Khai has only one real attraction which is the Sala Keoku.  It's a park featuring giant fantastic concrete sculptures inspired by Buddhism and Hinduism.   We had visited here eight years ago and we could not miss seeing it again.

The creator was Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, of either Thai or Lao origin depending on how one viewed him. The construction of the park started in 1978 and shares the style of his earlier creation, Buddha Park on the Laos side of Mekong.  However Sala Keoku is bigger and more extravagant with some sculptures reaching twenty five meters high.

Two of the primary pieces, an enormous Naga matched by an equally tall Buddha.

The Circle of Life. One enters it via a large orifice and it represents the passage through a lifetime.

It was time to break out of local food for a change so for supper we went to a burger joint called Melted Punk.  Just a pop up in a yard hidden down an alleyway.  Nice music, good burger and chips (french fries to some of you) and a different vibe.
