Nam Nao National Park Day 2

A day mostly spent birding or relaxing.

Birding was moderately fruitful with a few lifers, none of which I was able to photograph, and lots of birds we have seen in the past.  Unfortunately it was a dull grey day again so photography in the gloom of the forest was difficult with very slow shutter speeds the order of the day.

Red-billed Blue Magpies (Urocissa erythroryncha) are trash birds here but I struggled get any decent pictures of them because of the low light and their busy nature.

Likewise the White-crested Laughing Thrushes (Garrulax leucolophus).

The Greater Racket-tailed Drongos (Dicrurus paradiseus) were equally difficult because they mostly stick to heavily shaded areas.

Birding in the forest wasn't made easier by the many Finlayson's Squirrels (Callosciurus finlaysonii) which kept distracting our attention with their bird like calls.

The biggest impediment was the plague of leeches that kept us out of the more interesting parts of the forest.  By the time I stopped to take precautions against them I  had twelve of the little suckers latched onto my feet.  We gave up and stuck to birding from the road network.

Bill ShaneyfeltGross... Always hate to find them attached! But if you are of a mind to let them, I guess it is ok from what I read.

Jean-Marc StrydomTo Bill ShaneyfeltI don't worry about them too much if they are on my legs. But it's the ones between my toes that are irritating. Unfortunately we're not traveling with closed shoes, only sandals, so the first thing they latched onto were my feet.

Tomorrow we head out westwards towards Petchabun (which we will only reach in two day's time) but we plan to get some early morning birding done before we hit the road.
