Traveling With A Foreigner: Strange Observations and Discoveries
"What are those cents for?" Leo asked.
I had just paid for drinks in a Quicky-Mart and tossed my extra penny in the "take a penny, leave a penny" saucer. So I explained the inner workings of the system...
"If your bill comes out to $2.01, for example, you can take a penny so you don't end up with 99 cents in change rattling around in your pocket. If your bill is $1.99, for example, and you end up with an extra penny, you can throw it in for the next guy who might have a bill of $2.01."
"Oh!" He said, clearly impressed. "We don't have that in Europe. I like it. It's has elements of socialism."
I agreed. And clearly America has not lost its edge when it comes to innovative ideas.
