San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands can only be reached via the Washington State Ferry System or if you have your own boat (or plane). There are 100's of islands but 3 (Lopez, San Juan and Orcas) are where most people live and where the ferries go. The ferries continually move people and their cars between the islands. Al drove me to Anacortes where I boarded the ferry for Lopez island, my first stop. You just walk your bike right on to the first level of the ferry. Lots of cyclists, I was never the only one riding. The ferries are huge and can carry up to 150 cars. I rode about 30 miles today making a loop of the island. Whew! Much hillier than I thought. There a very small community called Lopez Village but most of the island is farmlands.  A very pretty and pastoral island.

Today's ride: 30 miles (48 km)
Total: 30 miles (48 km)
