The Ten Dollar Note Town: Wellington to Gulgong
Wellington sits beside the sizeable Macquarie River. Rivers with water in them are relatively rare in inland Australia so I made an effort to backtrack a kilometre or two for early morning photos.
From the Wellington on the Macquarie we turned off the Mitchell Highway and headed north easterly into slightly more verdant countryside.
Today was a relatively short ride, so we reached Gulgong with ample time to do some touristing and shop around for more patches and tubes.
Gulgong exemplifies the pitfalls of a tourism strategy based on currency images. When Australia first moved to decimal currency, it used old fashioned paper notes like the ones the U.S, still uses. The $10 note featured scenes from Gulgong and the famous Australian poet Henry Lawson who is linked to the area.
Note technology moved on to the new polymer currency note technology invented in Australia and now being used by countries not wanting their notes to be counterfeited. The changeover ended Gulgong's reputation as the Town on the Ten Dollar Note.
