Tuttlingen to Sigmaringen

Forests, gorges, towering cliffs and a dip in the Donau.

July 21 Thursday 51kms

Tuttlingen to Sigmaringen.

Forests, gorges, towering cliffs and a dip in the Donau.

The ride along the river in its early stages is impressive. Much of it is through steep sided gorges, heavily forested and with massive limestone outcrops. On some of these houses and chapels have been built.

Walking paths signposted.

Along the route peaks were crowned with chapels and small buildings.

Along the route we meet and pass our new friends from the previous campsite. At one point we all take shelter together from a massive thunderstorm. Once this has passed temperatures again rise. Evidence that the school year is finishing is shown by the numbers of young groups out having instructions on kayaking and other water sports. The route comprises a number of small hamlets and towns where religious houses seem to be a central feature.

Although we had one or two climbs, they are manageable. By late afternoon we have reached Sigmaringen, a town slightly dwarfed under the towering Hohenzollern schloss.

This part of the route is very pretty as the path winds through valleys.

At the camping ground we find that our French  friends have kindly saved a place for us and we catch up with the others who have shared our previous site. The camping ground is crowded with young German school students on various school camps- behaviour of students on camp doesn’t seem to change the world over. They seem pretty responsibly behaved, if rather loud at 1:30 AM!

Ann and I have a swim in the Donau to wash away the labours of the day and dine well on wurst , sauerkraut and chick peas- a delightful combination.

Today's ride: 51 km (32 miles)
Total: 1,803 km (1,120 miles)
