August 10 Wednesday Ora to Trento
51kms
Our day is dominated by the craggy limestone cliffs of the lower Dolomiti, and we practise our Italian in Trento.
The rain stops for our morning ride. Enjoy the scrubby cliffs and limestone bluffs that surround us. Earthquake country. Informative signs on route now have English translation, and include notes on Iron Age settlements, Roman progress through the valley with their bridges and drainage projects and the current ability to use all the land because the river has been controlled.

We meet a UK family at an info post and exchange travel stories. As is often the case, we see them again in Trento and Riva la Garda.
After lunch we cycle slightly off piste to explore one of the villages under the bluffs. Magre Sulla Strada del Vino is famed for its ancient grape vine and wonderful Gewurtstraminer wine- it’s on the wine trail. Our excursion finds us neither vine nor wine but we enjoy an exploration of the pretty town.
Back on the trail, we continue through this amazing landscape of bluffs and river towards Trento.

We enter Trento and find a hostel near the station. Evening exploration and food shopping is in town centre, a pedestrian area where modern shops mix with palazzos and piazzas. Hidden courtyards appear when ancient doors are opened.
There is a large lock up room for bikes, our hostel room is spacious, and we eat there while planning ahead. A change from Verona to Mantua is mooted, as there is a definite trail linking the two.
Today's ride: 51 km (32 miles)
Total: 2,915 km (1,810 miles)
