June 19 Sunday
Guenrouet to Blain. 30kms
We spot our first chateau.
Another straightforward day on the canal path. Guenrouet is a sporty town where kayakers race on the river and there’s a flash piscine which for a mad moment we consider swimming in, but on Sunday morning it is pretty quiet.

The ride to Blain is pleasant, easy and shortish- a bit like the bursts of summer weather we’re getting.
We arrive in time to visit the monstrous chateau and climb a few floors up the spiral staircase. How people kept warm in those massive rooms is a mystery. Tapestries were more than just decoration. In the printing room a nice chap shows us how he makes multicoloured lino cuts. Outside we do a tour of the Medieval garden- it features a few favourite odeurs like lavender as well as some that have never assailed our nostrils before.
Back at the camping ground we have neighbours – one of whom is a young girl who has been cycle touring and towing her biggish dog around in a trailer. I can only hope it is grateful. Some French people have massive, and I mean really massive, dogs, with heads the size of a small television set. I have a theory that because they don’t feel compelled to pick up after them they decide to go for the doctor with pooch size. It’s just a theory.
Today's ride: 30 km (19 miles)
Total: 438 km (272 miles)
