Steep downhill ride in Kaiserstuhl this morning with a broken rear quick release skewer and no rear brakes.I had broken my QR skewer while working on my bike this morning. Then my rear brakes had been getting progressively worse over the past day and a half. So I had to pedal slowly and carefully for a couple miles right as we started to get to the closest bike shop. This hill was particularly scary and I had to Fred Flintstone it a little towards the bottom to keep from getting too fast

Steve Miller/GrampiesCannot "like" this ! Obviously disaster did not ensue, but it could have done.

Tony BontaTo Steve Miller/GrampiesYes, I probably was risking it to be riding the bike at all that morning. I was fortunate that we made it to the bike shop w/o incident

Statue of John of Nepomyk on the bridge over the Rhine into Kaiserstuhl Switzerland. He was the saint of Bohemia and the protector from floods and drowning. And he was drowned in a river at the behest of King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. (Was that the same guy from the Christmas Carol? No, we later learned the Xmas carol was about Wenceslaus I.)

A mechanic at this bike shop was able to put in a brand new set of brake pads and replace the spring between the pads that had broken

Tony BontaTo Mike AylingSo to be more specific, I heard a loud snap when I was working on some other issues on the bike this morning and suddenly I noticed my QR skewer wouldn't tighten. The nut would screw in and stay, but was super loose.

They had a matching sized QR Skewer at the bike shop here and I actually noticed when installing it that it wasn't really the skewer that had broken, but the nut on my old QR skewer was somehow damaged. I have a nice DT Swiss skewer that you can get super tight and I guess I'd been locking it down so hard for so long that I somehow managed to break the thread on the nut.

So ultimately, I kept the original DT Swiss skewer and just replaced the nut.

We don't stop at every town sign we pass, but Ellen insisted we stop at this one for some reason and take a pic

We cycled through a lot of really rough gravel stretches like this today along with a couple of ugly road stretches w fast cars. Turns out this is the one 20 mile stretch in Switzerland where the EV15 route doesn't parallel the Swiss route 2 signs that we've been following. Oh well, it was only 20 miles or so and we still made it safely to where we intended to spend the night.

Steve Miller/GrampiesBetter to ride slowly and safely than on a busy road with a smoother surface, we say.

We're starting to see a few cruise boats as the Rhine gets consistently wider and deeper

Bridge overlooking Rheinfelden (where we stayed tonight). Rheinfelden is one of those cities that exists in two countries (Switzerland and Germany in this case). We stayed in the more affordable German side of the river.

Steve Miller/GrampiesSo did we some years ago, but we crossed to the Swiss side and watched the world soccer cup final on a tv set up in a bar.

Tony BontaTo Steve Miller/GrampiesI think it's pretty interesting that the same town is split like this and it's so easy to simply go down the hill cross the bridge and be in another country
