Day 168 Rest Day in La Paz: Shopping day
Today is shopping day. After breakfast (another one of those pancakes) we hit the streets and shop around the San Francisco church for woolen scarves, cloths, hand bags, and so on. We learn at the DML office that a box of 10 kg would cost $110 USD, three day delivery. Since Patrick has about 40 rolls of exposed film to be sent home, it seems like a good deal to get that box full. We buy a lot of future gifts and just things we like for ourselves.
Patrick doesn't bargain the way he did in Asia and Africa. The asking price is only a few BS more than their bottom price, bargaining doesn’t lower prices the way it did in Africa. Sometimes we ask for a special price for buying two or more items. At lunchtime we are loaded with plastic bags and our little treasures.
Last, we go over the witches' market and alley behind the church with little stalls selling good luck charms, ceramic statues of the Panchamama and other religious figures. Grotesque are the dried lama fetuses, used to bless people's houses.
We invite Jesper & Maria to our room, have appetizers and wine there and then take a taxi in search of an Italian restaurant. That seems to have closed it doors for good. So we end up at Cosali’s pizza. Beer across the street afterwards.
