Day 81: Bartoszyce to Orneta
Along Tree Lined Country Roads
Our original plan was to follow the Green Velo Route all the way to the coast, take a ferry across the bay to the narrow spit of land that leads all the way to Gdansk. But we learned that the ferry is a tourist ferry that only runs in the high season. Also the Green Velo Route does a couple of big zigzags before reaching the coast and the booking.com website does not show a whole lot of accommodation options along this way.
So we changed plans and take a more direct route to Gdansk.
As we get going this morning we have to dodge large groups of dressed-up elementary school kid groups on their way to an event at the main square. The commotion throws Patrick off a bit and we leave town going in the wrong direction. The GPS does not lie though, and with a couple of turns we find the right roads.

Initially there is quite a bit of traffic, but then we turn onto a quiet, narrow, smooth asphalt road lined with trees. It is an awesome ride amidst very large fields. We wonder how it is the fields are so large, maybe something to do with the collective farming during the Soviet years?

The road surface is good for the first half of the ride, then we get a 10km section of absolute horrible paving. We bounce around, since there is no other traffic we can weave from one side to the other trying to find the smoothest path.
The last part gets good again, but traffic also picks up. As usual we shop on our way into town and continue to our hotel. A very nice place just outside the town center with an attached restaurant. The bikes can sit in the lobby and our room is on the second floor.
Today's ride: 55 km (34 miles)
Total: 4,139 km (2,570 miles)
