Day 80: Wegorzewo to Bartoszyce
Vast Rolling Farmland
“We’ve arrived at the time women have come to the store to shop for the day,” Rachel says as we take our first break in Lesniewo, most are riding bikes all carrying their small shopping bag and saying hi to friends. This is our first break for the day and Patrick finds iced coffee and pastries. We see a cyclist ride by on an adjacent street. Patrick takes some photos of the town. There are a huge number of crows flying around.
The day starts at our usual routine and time. We follow the bike route along the lake and harbor out of town. We start on nice bike trails that follow the main road. Even though traffic on the road is light, it is still nice to ride separate, even though it means our hills are often a little steeper and more frequent than the road. We pass through several small towns that all have a grocery store.

The second stop brings us fruit juice and a chocolate bar and we see the cyclists. Patrick chats with him a bit then he joins us for a break. Matheus is Polish and is quite the adventurer. Earlier this year he summited Mt. Everest, earlier he skied to the South Pole and he cycled on most continents, except for North America it sounds like he has really been around. He writes books about his travels, but none have been translated to English. Now he is riding a Koga e-bike around Poland. We chat for a while, but once we set off he is gone.

Our bikepaths turn to very lightly used secondary roads. Part of it is still dirt, even though RWGPS shows it all paved. Then back to asphalt, but extremely rough. Dirt might be better than all the bumps we endure. Given these complaints it is still nice to be off main roads and enjoying the scenery.

In Sepopol, we stop at a grocery store for cold drinks and ice cream. Here is a decision point. The Green Velo does a loop up further North and the road we’ve been cycling continues on a direct route. We decide to take a short-cut from the Green Velo route at the end, since we are on a road anyways. The pavement is rough, but there is no traffic. A bonus is cycling through Wirwilty with a very artistic flair.
We are staying at the Bartis Hotel right downtown just off the city square and pedestrian walkway. This is a very nice place and bike friendly with a downstairs room for the bikes. The best though after days of carrying gear up three flights of stairs there is an elevator. Not as sweet as rooms where a loaded bike can be rolled into the room, but the next best thing.
Today's ride: 74 km (46 miles)
Total: 4,084 km (2,536 miles)
