Day 79: Goldap to Wegorzewo
Green Velo "Rail Trail"
“This reminds me of the Military Trail in Wisconsin,” Rachel says then adds, “I have to keep reminding myself we are in Poland.”
Today is a shorter day in distance and check-in to our accommodations for tonight is not until 3pm. So it’s a later start. We leave the city on a bike path for about 7km and then join the Green Velo route. We stop at one of the designated rest stops: with a shelter and picnic table, and lots of bike parking. We will be at the start of the unsealed trail.

The first part doesn’t look good with corrugations, but this only about 50 meters and we are on the trail. It feels a lot like the rail-to-trails we were on in the Upper Midwest: Long straight sections in dense forest at a very modest railroad grade. They spent a lot of money on fencing along the trail, anywhere there is a steep drop metal railing has been installed. Some of the way the trail follows a high ridge from where we have nice views over the surrounding farmland. The fields are huge and have been mostly harvested by now. Farmers are busy plowing and fertilizing their land.

We had hoped to try for an early check-in, but the last communication with the hotel sounded like that was not possible. So we take it easy, shop first and still show up a little early. In the end there is no issue, our room is ready. It is a different kind of place, at the marina above a tourist information center. It seems there are only two rooms, we get one with three single beds. There is a small kitchen and a shared bathroom.
Today's ride: 50 km (31 miles)
Total: 4,010 km (2,490 miles)
