Day 50: Vuotso to Sodankyla
A Beautiful Day for a Bike Ride
“What a beautiful day for a bike ride,” repeats Patrick throughout the day today.
Our room is quiet and comfortable. We sleep like logs. At 7:30 breakfast is served in the main building and we are there. There is oatmeal, fresh fruit, eggs, toast, coffee, juices and of course dried fish and pickled herring.

We have a long day ahead of us, but today the wind should be less of a factor. For most of the morning it is forecast to blow from the west, the tree line gives us good cover. We make good time, there is a café at about 18km that we pass by in favor of the next one at 37 km. It’s a nice place run by a Scottsman.
The caffeine does wonders, the next 30 fly by. Same same but different scenery: lots of trees, blueberries on the forest floor, and lakes. We have a couple of “rollers” but the country is flattening out quite a bit.
b The last 25 get a little harder as the wind turns more to the south. We have lunch at one of the few bus stalls we see, then push on to town picking up a bike path on the outskirts. We stop at a grocery store to buy some supplies, then, head through town to the campground.
Across the road is a pub with finger food where we are now enjoying a beer and waiting for our fried seafood baskets.
Today's ride: 91 km (57 miles)
Total: 2,544 km (1,580 miles)
