Day 43: Olderfjord to Lakselv

Last day riding along an Arctic Fjord

“Now that we made it to the Northcape, we need a new goal,” Rachel says this morning as we are about to set off. The main focus of this tour has been going to the Northcape, everything additional would be a bonus. What do you do when you meet your goal? Set a new one. “Yeah, cheap beer in the Baltics” Patrick replies. Four days ago we were the cyclists heading north while most in the campground were going south. Now we are headed south.

Early morning we heard the tick-tick of light rain on the tent. It didn’t last long but just enough to now pack a wet rainfly. We pack-up, have our breakfast in the camp kitchen and start rolling just before eight. There are at least another dozen cyclists in the campground, most have not yet stirred.

Today is the last day cycling along the mirror like waters of a Norwegian fjord. Lakselv lays at the end of the Porsanger fjord, after that we will leave the coast and face the mosquitoes…..

Low clouds reflected in the water, low mountains on the other side.

It is a very nice ride today, noticeably cooler than the last two weeks with some cloud cover. Perfect for cycling. There are a couple of hills, but nothing too steep. We stop a at a Coop store for an iced coffee and reach Lakselv just after noon. In the parking lot of the grocery store is Thai food-truck where we have out hot lunch. Dinner tonight will be crackers, tuna and smoked salmon.

The campground is just on the other side of town, we find a nice spot close to the beach with some benches. The campground has washers/dryers where Rachel gets all our dirty clothes washed and dried. Patrick uses the internet to plan the ride from here to Rovaniemi and makes some reservations. We like to plan our ride these days. In the old days we would just go and see how far we would get, now we find it nicer to have a destination and by planning ahead we can avoid ending up in places with no campgrounds, or only expensive accommodations.
