Day 39: Olderfjord to Repvag

Fantastic coastal road

“Have a good ride,” Patrick says to the German Bikepack Racer, then continues “Catch us if you can,” as we set out. It doesn’t take long before he whizzes by us.

Waking up this far north is always a disorienting experience. You just have no idea what time it is. At home we can guess within about an hour what time it is by judging the light. Here it could be 2am or 9am and you would not know the difference. We both sleep with eye-covers but still wake up around three or four thinking we should be headed out.

Today is another short day though and we don’t want to get to our hotel too early, official check-in is after three. So we sleep in until it starts getting too warm in the tent. We pack-up and head across the street for the buffet breakfast. It’s quite expensive, but the variety of coffee, juices, eggs, fruit, cereal and yoghurt are worth the splurge. There are several racers heaving breakfast. We talk to a German guy who explains it is a bikepacking race from Italy to the Northcape: 4000km! He has been at it for 20 days and today he will reach the finish. Quite an accomplishment

Starting the day off with a buffet breakfast at the cafe across the road.

It is close to nine before we start rolling north. The wind picks up and pushes us along a fantastic coast line. Today there are a few clouds and but still mostly sunny. We stop a couple of times to take photos or reindeer, fishing boats and nice vistas. There are three tunnels, the longest almost 4km, but it has a bikelane and traffic is light, so the noise is not too daunting.

The road hugs the coastline, occasionally in the curve of the bay, the crosswinds are strong like the Patagonia winds.

We get to the Repvag junction and go about 2km to the fishing village. There is a huge red building in the middle, partly built over the water that is known as the “Russian Hotel”. We later hear the owner is Russian. We read about it on the Jarman’s journal and wanted to see it.

Buildings in the distance is our destination for today...Repvag

We are way too early for check-in, but after a short wait the lady that is cleaning the rooms gets us checked-in. The rooms are basic but nice and clean, with that Russian flair…..

The dining hall at the hotel. Lots of character. The hotel is very cheap for Norway ($47), the food costs more, but is very good. The owner is Russian.

There is good Wi-Fi and as advertised the restaurant is very good. We have fresh cod fish and chips and a cold beer. We share our table with Olaf, a German guy who works as a construction manager on large projects around the world and have a nice conversation.

As we pay, the lady points to the display of magnets and indicates for Rachel to pick one “as a gift.” She picks one of a troll.

Elspeth JarmanFantastic! Glad you stayed at the Russian Hotel. Superb reindeer photos Patrick and loved the one Rachel took of Patrick taking them, took me a while to spot!
