Day 33: Oldendalen to Forselv
From Fog to Sunshine
“I need windshield wipers for my glasses,” Rachel declares as the heavy morning fog is also condensing on her helmet and dripping down her face. The fog is dense and we miss some of the views along the coastline, until we start to see the mountains across the bay rising above the line of fog. Slowly as the sun gets stronger, the fog is gone and we have blue skies.
We take our time getting going this morning. At about eight we say our goodbyes to the owner and head out. It is very foggy but fortunately traffic is very light.

After about 15km on the main road the EV route takes us off the main road for a short distance, and this is beautiful. The fog is clearing and we can see tall mountains with glaciers at the summit and snow fields descending into the fjord. We stop for a food break at what would be a perfect camp spot. A table of sorts and a wind break.
“You’ll see a rest area and the tunnel,” Patrick says, “and the road we take to the left.” “I sure hope this is part of the big hill for today,” adds Rachel. We’ve been climbing slowly up to the rest area. Cyclists are not allowed in the 4.6km long tunnel. From the rest area, we see the cut where the old road goes, and we start the climb. Looking up to the ridge, we think this might be the high point but then rounding the corner we see another ridge. Is this part of the climb still or part of the downhill? We round another corner and the road flattens out a bit and we still gently climb. Then we reach the point where we start a nice long downhill. At the bottom, the road we are cycling joins the main road only briefly at the exit of the tunnel, we pick up a bike path that takes all through Storslett.
We stop at the Spar for groceries. Tomorrow is Sunday and shops will be closed so we need to buy enough for two days of lunches, tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s dinner. Loaded down we ride on to the Forselv campground. It is nicely situated on a fjord, but the tent area we are directed to is off to the side with hardly any views. At least it is quiet. The sun is strong today, we pitch the tent and drape the sleeping bag over it to provide shade and a cooler inside. There is a small kitchen where we heat up another frozen dinner; sweet and sour chicken again.
Today's ride: 63 km (39 miles)
Total: 1,615 km (1,003 miles)
