Week 9: to Gotse Delchev: easing back into cycling with a long downhill
Just take a look at the profile on the map of our ride today! Sweet! "We'll pay for this tomorrow" Patrick says. We will have to climb up to the border of Greece and then start our way down to the Mediterranean Sea.
Lyuben, our Warmshowers host, fixed us toast, eggs and coffee for breakfast. Today is a short day with an expectation of "easy", so we are in no hurry to get on the road. Though sometimes it's better not to have expectations, we will see.
The road was a beautiful slow downhill, helped by a tailwind for the first part, cycling through forest and along the Mesta River going downstream. Doesn't get any better for cycling. Clouds are threatening a rainstorm so we do want to get to our destination before or if rains start.
Just outside Gotse Delchev, Patrick stops and waves me forward. There is 3000 kms on the odometer! Passing small milestones are a boost. We reach our hotel just before noon, settle in, have our customary Coke and potato chips and relax. What a life!
