to Poza de Macho: Fincas and Aldeas
As we ride out of town, at two kilometers is the Manja Blancha Hotel, it looks nice but it is rather isolated for food. Although, it would be an easy tuktuk ride back to town for dinner or shopping. The first 20km, we see only fincas until El Plantel where we stop for a break. After here, there are regular shops and small villages called "aldeas" or hamlets. We see many “tortillaria’s”, small roadside shacks where you can hear the sound of women slapping out the tortilla dough and baking tortillas on an iron plate over an open fire. Along the road, young girls are carrying bowls with dough on their heads.
It is nice to follow in the tracks of Curtis and Jenny Shaw, they just came this way and left us a good description of the route. On the map there is very little between El Ceibo on the border and La Libertad. The distance is about 137 kilometers, much too far for us in one day on these rolling roads. But thanks to them we know about a nice place to stay about halfway. Perfect!
Hotel Nuevo Almancer is part of a small shopping center in a spread out little town along the highway. There is no town center, but we know where to look and see the sign. It offers a very nice room with AC, TV, and a bathroom that not only has a toilet seat, but even has a toilet seat cover! That must be the first one we’ve seen in a long time, we are already happy if the toilet has a toilet seat. All this for 125Q or about $16. There is a small restaurant where we have lunch and dinner later on.
