Day 133: Beverly - Visiting Martha's Vineyard
Long day's drive for a great experience
Tony has a special treat for us today. He has offered to drive us to Cape Cod where we’ll take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. So after breakfast, we set off.
It’s quite a ride between the traffic, distance, navigating through Boston to Cape Cod, and listening to Tony tell stories. We reach the parking area for the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, get onto a bus and reach the ferry terminal just in the nick of time. We purchase tickets and run to the ferry to Oak Bluff. The crossing is 45 minutes, and beautiful weather. We walk around the pier until Tony’s friend Dave who lives on the island year round arrives. Dave is loaning his car to Tony to take us around the island.
First we walk along the docks, and stop at a café for lunch of Clam Chowder. Tony drives Dave back to his house and then finds us to tour the Gingerbread Houses at Oak Bluff.
There are 300 colorful houses that originated as a 19th century Methodist Campground. The Tabernacle is still central and filled with rocking chairs and still functions as a religious facility. The charming houses are built in an architectural style known as Carpenter’s Gothic. After wandering around the complex, we return to the car and are off to explore the island.
The point of interest to see is the National Landmark of Gray Head Cliffs. Perched on the cliff is the only working lighthouse built in 1856 in Aquinnah. Part of the area is on the Wampanoag reservation. We drive back to Vineyard’s Haven to return the car to Dave and catch the 5pm ferry back to Cape Cod. We arrive back to Tony’s house late.
A full day of sightseeing.
