Day 113: Machias River campground to Meddybemps
A beautiful warmshowers stay
“This is a beautiful spot, one of the best Warmshowers stay,” Patrick says as we find the cabin on Lake Meddybemps. Our hosts, Carey and Diane are not home, so we enjoy the view and set up the tent in the yard.
There is a mist above the Machias River as we pack up camp. Using the word camp, is very New England. People who have second homes and cabins, use the term “camp”. We continue on the Airline Road and stop at Crawford at a Country store for a break. We see many fields of wild blueberries. There are some hefty hills. When we reach Alexander we turn on Cooper Road to Route 191 then to Meddybemps. We see views of the lake. Patrick navigates us to the peninsula on Rocky Cove Road to our hosts place.
They arrive home after 3pm from a bike ride. We visit and enjoy a beer and a great dinner.Diane explains that Meddybemps means “plenty of Alewives” (a fish) and once a Native American village of the Pamaquoddy Tribe. Kerry is an engineer/chemist who specializes in storm water management.
We hear an occasional call of a loon on the lake.
