Drive to Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

August 29, 2023

We leave Islamabad with the plan to overnight in Chilas. At the end  of the day, we continue further to a Hotel at Raikot Bridge. Tomorrow we will transfer to 4wd jeep for the drive to Tatto Village and the start of the trek to Fairy Meadows.

Out of Islamabad we are on the Karakorum Highway. We pass Abbottabad where Bin Laden was holed-up.   At the Manshera there is a turnoff for a shortcut. During the summer months instead of following the official KKH you can save a lot of kilometers by going across the Babusar Pass (4,175 meters).

The turnoff to go across Babusar Pass. We stop at a shop for water.

Keith AdamsNigh on 40 years ago I spent three or four weeks in the Karakorum, doing the field work collecting data for my Master's degree. We worked our way up the Indus River from Peshawar, then eventually crossed over into the Swat River valley. Somewhere along that part of the trek we stayed in Gilgit and Hunza.

Your photos instantly returned me to that adventure!
