Day 5: Glenroy crossing to Marlborough

It was peak hour at Glenroy Crossing this morning between 5am and 6:30 when I reckon about six cars went past.

Gabby made an instagram worthy (well, he put it on instagram) poached egg with smashed avo on toast which worked quite well. I’m still amazed eggs lasted two days in panniers intact.

We were on the road about 9:30 again but luckily it was cooler today. After a very fast 10k of flood plains on a good surface with a tail wind we climbed up a small ridge.

After enjoying the top of the ridge we plunged down into a valley but didnt immediately have to ride up out of it as we were able to follow the creek for a while.

Eventually we had to ride up some more small ranges, into stony hilly country. We stopped at the national trail campsite in a dry creek bed for lunch then rode on about 10 minutes to find a creek with actual running water, so thanks for nothing national trial!

We found ourselves in some more open areas, but only because they’d pushed the paddocks and were burning the stumps.

The ridge lines either side of us were pretty spectacular with red rock faces on the west. There is a real sense of the unknown like no one ever comes down here or looks at those hills too closely:

Eventually we did come down onto more plains near Marlborough.

It seemed dried on the approach to Marlborough although it was raining slightly

we had four ks of the Marlborough Sabrina road which was busier than I hoped but fingers crossed for tomorrow. We rode into Marlborough township only to find that the caravan park is back on the highway a bit south.

Linda had posted three boxes of food here that we have to sort out tomorrow! Linda herself unfortunately has not healed well enough to join us on the ride (probably).

The caravan park and later pub are full of contractors, probably at least some from Clarke Creek. They appear mostly not to be vegetarian as there were no options at the pub so I went with fish and chips. Dave again managed to finish his meal even though this time it was a massive steak and still have room for a magnum from the servo for dessert.

Today's ride: 62 km (39 miles)
Total: 336 km (209 miles)
