Bari

Today was our first full day in Bari so after a bit of a sleep in we walked around the town and visited the local fort that was first built in the 12th century by the Normans.  As often happens it was destroyed and then rebuilt in the 13th century.  It has a strong history with the famous Sforza family.  It is under renovation again but there were a couple of very interesting audiovisual productions inside to explain the history of the region.  After a light lunch we both had a nap before an evening stroll and an amazing pizza dinner.  It was a sunny day and about 18C but cool enough in the evening to need a jacket.

The famous Orecchiette street where the nonas make fresh pasta every day.

A nona making orecchiette all day and I mean all day. She was still there at 7pm while all of the men sat around, drank beer and chatted.

The guy next to us had this pizza called an Americano complete with hot dogs, French fries and cheese whiz on a white base. And they won’t allow pineapple, go figure.

Hilary JaegerCheese Whiz or yellow mustard? Either way, not appealing!

Hilary JaegerBari looks prettier than I had imagined. The clear skies probably donā€™t hurt. Plus Orechiette is one of my favourite pastas, great with sausage and broccolini. Your comment about the old woman making pasta for 12 hours while the men sat around drinking beer reminded me of the Portuguese neighborhood I lived in in Toronto. Women working as cleaners or in the garment districts while the numerous ā€˜social clubsā€™ were filled with men all day!

Karen PoretTo Pat HeydonNot ā€œtheirā€ taste, but perhaps their ā€œlureā€ for customers who donā€™t know any better? ā€¦ I guess when you are hungry, anything is ok..
