In Grottaglie (a photo gallery)

I’d better do some catching up before getting too far behind.  Looking back after a few days, I’m surprised to be reminded of what an appealing place Grottaglie was - we’ll worth a stop, especially if you show up when its streets aren’t all awash with runoff from the latest cloudburst.  The historical center is very attractive, full of interest and artistic touches.

Our street. The clock tower made a good navigation point for finding our way home again.

The sidewalks of the main commercial strip are pretty but dizzying, rippling before your eyes as you walk and making you feel seasick.

Grottaglie is full of artistic touches like this, reflecting its focus on ceramics. It feels like a town that takes pride in its appearance.

A lot of the wall art has a cartoonish character.

The whitish walls and multi-hued streets make an appealing combination.

There are ceramics shops everywhere you turn in the historic center.

Grottiglie’s 16th century castle, now the host of the ceramics museum. We thought we might come back for a look the next day, but the downpour washed that thought away.

Finding our way home after dark. So much easier these days when you’ve got a map and navigation on the phone!

This is the only painted tile staircase I remember seeing outside of Sicily.
