Sep 28 - Craters of the Moon and WoodRiver Trail

Today was another 2 ride day due to travel and trail length. We first stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument after leaving Idaho Falls. It wasn’t a long ride but it definitively was NOT a rail trail type of ride either.
As we started, I must admit, we were a bit disappointed as we had always heard this was like going to moon and what we were finding was this is a lava flow that got exposed over the course of time. But, fortunately, the moon-like part was after a short but steep 10% grade. Then we got it.

So after our moon ride, we then headed towards Bellevue, Idaho which is on the road towards Sun Valley.
Bellevue is the starting point for the Wood River Rail Trail and what a gem! We’ve ridden trails throughout the United States and this was simply one of the smoothest we’ve been on. The scenery on both sides of the trail is high desert hillsides and it was a joy to ride.
We only did one part today as tomorrow we will complete the trail as well as some of the trails around Sun Valley. Sure glad we aren’t here during the winter season as the ski resort would probably be a bit crazy.
Today's ride: 33 miles (53 km)
Total: 8,159 miles (13,131 km)
