Sep 25 - Headwaters Trail System

As we stayed last night in Whitehall, it was a short drive to Three Forks for today’s ride.  Three Forks was aptly named after the the rivers that feed into the Missouri River at its headwaters.  This location was even more unique for us as we cycled the first 1,000 miles of the Lewis and Clark with our daughters some years ago.  We didn’t make it last time due to the dangerous winds in South Dakota halting us  near the Badlands but we did make it today.

The trail system was quite enjoyable and quite empty.  Starting west of Three Forks we wound our way through the small town and then kept heading east until we found another path leading to the Headwaters State Park where one can stand at the junction of the rivers where Lewis and Clark also stood many years ago.  In and of itself, its a joining of rivers but in the history of our country and the push westward, it was a significant location.

There were several displays along the way providing some insight into the events before and after that day and we enjoyed adding them to our knowledge from our previous trip.  I guess we can now say we’ve seen the beginning of the Missouri River as well as its start.

The ride back went quickly and we made haste southward for tomorrow’s exploration of the Tetons … a place where we may have spent part of our honeymoon 42 years ago.
