Oct 5 - Row River Trail

Finally … back on a rail trail!  One thing we have found with our newest bike travel mode is that we simply enjoy the rail trails so much better than “other” types of rides.

Today’s ride was simply a joy!  We started in. Cottage Grove, Oregon and immediately got on the trail though we did sit in the parking lot for a bit as we waited for the temperature to rise and the misty skies to clear.  Today was the first day of this trip that we had to wait for the skies to clear but being in no hurry, we have that option.

Once on the trail we enjoyed the gentle upward grade, stands of tall trees, a few open fields, the lake off on our side, and the quietness of not being by any roads with traffic.  The miles passed quickly before we reached the turn around which seemed to come way too soon.

The ride back was similar with the exception that we both took off our long pants as the sun was finally warming up the ride.  As it was a gentle uphill on the outward bound, now it was a gentle downhill despite the headwinds that kicked up.

Way too soon, we were back at the van and needing to get up the road to pick up two new tires for my trike as this ride let the blue out as I had worn out the tread.  Believe I only got 4,000 miles off this set of tires but don’t remember if I had switched them from another trike before that.  Oh well, a bike shop just up the road had exactly what I needed and the bike mechanic looked like he had enjoy a lot of recreational drugs over the years.

Kelly IniguezJacinto lets his tires get a nice wide continuous blue stripe all around the tire before he takes them off. When I protest, he says even with so much blue showing, his tires are still thicker than mine. He has a point.

Larry MitchellI’ve wanted to experiment with how long one could go but don’t really like carrying a spare with me.
