Oct 1 - Bend Scenic Byway

Today was day 2 of the “remembrance tour” it seemed.  We started in Burns and did the 2 hour drive to Bend, Oregon.  Along the way, we kept noticing places where we had cycled 25 years ago and noting the changes, both good and bad, that seemed to have occurred.

One memorable place was Brothers, Oregon.  We remember cycling into Brothers, getting some food at the cafe, and buying some glass cowbody cups that we sent home to the girls.  Today, there were more buildings but everything was closed and no longer in business.

Bend was much the same way but in the opposite direction.  I clearly remember the road through Bend and the road out.  Nothing was the same today as there were new buildings, lots of new roads, bike lanes, etc.

As for the ride, I found a ride on RidewGPS that followed an Oregon Scenice Bikeway so we took it and were in for quite the treat.  Rolling northwest of Bend, we followed low trafficed roads past ranches and horse farms, never encountered very many vehicles and ended up taking a break at the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, a location that we had read about in a book titled Hope Rising.  The ranch focuses on troubled youth and rescued horses.  As the kids go through the program, both horse and human find healing and hope for the future.  Quite a treat to find something you’ve read about and suddenly you are there.

After that we rode back, found the van, and moved towards the south side of Bend to set up tomorrow’s ride.  A very, very nice day!
