Logistics and final thoughts

We rented our bikes from a company that delivers your bike to your hotel where you start your trip and collect it from the last hotel on your tour. (cycling-rentals.com) They provide this service in Portugal and Spain. When only one of our bike was delivered, they immediately went into action to find out where the bike went. In the end they did not charge us for the second bike due to the delay. We brought our own panniers with us.
We felt very safe on the roads here. Motorists are very respectful of cyclists. Just use common sense cycling in larger cities.
The trains in Portugal are very affordable and allow bikes on the trains if there is room. We never had any problems getting our bikes on the train. As we cycled towards Lisbon, the traffic became very heavy and unsafe for cycling. We took the train from Escrorial to Lisbon.
Food is very affordable except in the larger cities like Porto and Lisbon. We were able to pick up food in a local markets to take with us for the day. Other days we opted for a lunch in a restaurant and a sandwich in our room in the evening. We relied on local folks to send us to their favorite eateries. Never had a bad meal or a bad cup of coffee.
We used booking.com to book our hotels. We only booked our first and last hotel ahead of time. We budgeted no more than $200 Canadian per night for lodging. We paid slightly more in Porto and Lisbon.
