Villadangos: A trip through Leon and out the other side
(written by Ken)
After writing yesterday we explored the old walled town – the wall is three quarters intact and most of the town is inside. Took photos of the street signs and finally at 7.45pm went to a very good restaurant for an 8.50E pilgrim meal. Excellent wine and food – we were the only pilgrims eating there poor lady
Today we got our bikes out and loaded up at about 8.15am – back on the N120. Much busier now there is still a good shoulder so that apart from a long bridge it was fine.
After 10k or so we pulled off for breakfast – a coffee and a roll. Then up quite a pinch before seeing Leon and a long descent into the city. Along the road at one point I saw a very well preserved hand-powered threshing machine. I saw quite a few when we were walking but none complete like this one. Later I saw another but it had lost its handle.
We walked after a while through the old city walls and finally into the cathedral square. It looked as fine as ever. Tricia went inside – a lot of restoration going on.
After an hour or so we set off to find our way out of the centre remembering that we had problems last time. This time we stayed on the route but could not ride on the narrow busy pavements. We eventually got on the old N120 and though there was a lot of traffic it was OK – 2m shoulder.
We had a lunch stop under a tree and carried on for the last 8km to here. We are right beside the N120 in an Hostal. The village is small but has a church and I found a small barn with at least 1 cow and a calf right in the town!
I finally photographed a retired Pegaso truck and an old Ford truck. No tractors
Endless frustration trying to put on photos will try again tomorrow
