Past Bayonne and Biarritz to Bidart: Our last full day in France we have done 2000km
We said goodbye to the wonderful cycle paths through the pine forests today, all the way they have been perfectly signed and have also given us accurate distances. It all began to be more and more built up and there were lots of roads and cars and houses but the signage stayed good until we were just reaching the Ardour River. We turned towards it and luckily met two Dutch Touring Cyclists who said ‘Just follow the river until you get to the Red bridge then go over it’ so that is what we did.
We haven’t seen Bayonne at all as we just went through one corner of it but we did see the magnificent twin spire of the Cathedral in the distance. After this all semblance of route marking disappeared. I had always thought that there was a lot of fuss about Biarritz and that I would find it underwhelming as I do Monacco but no it is gorgeous with its towering cliffs and fine bulldings. Luckily I am getting a bit fitter so I could enjoy the views as I went up the many hills. Ken took lots of photos so you can judge for yourself. We came to the little village of Bidart. I had had about enough for the day and the town square is like a balcony looking over the surrounding countryside. There were two boys playing that strange game Fonton and the square had 4 hotels and restaurants. How could we possibly ride past so here we are in our room looking out towards the sea with the rather scary looking mountainous Spanish Coast in the distance. Tomorrow we will be in Spain.
