Alberobello to Ostuni

A lovely ride in the Itria Valley

At 10 o`clock sharp we returned the keys for our lovely trulli apartment and began making our way out of Alberobello. After a quick stop at a busy main street café for some breakfast,  we were off.

Today`s ride was really very nice as we traversed small country roads in the Itria Valley and visited the towns of Locoretondo and Cisternino. The area was very rural, full of dry stacked rock walls, olive tree groves, vineyards and trulli buildings in all forms and sizes. Seeing the trulli in their natural settings, dotting the country side, was beautiful.

Our trulli for the night.

A trulli in the wild. So cool. These buildings are now being appreciated and many are being restored and used as functional shelters.

A nicely decorated wall in Locoretondo.

We happily found ourselves on a designated cycle route! There were very few markings but hardly any cars either.

Small country backroads are not fast but very enjoyable, easy riding.

Our lunch stop was in Cisternino. Through the narrow streets and at the far end of this piazza we found a good spot.

Back on the quiet roads. Took this picture to capture cactus, two trulli and olive trees all in one shot.

Our ride today was mainly on a downhill grade but just before arriving into Ostuni the road changed.  Ostuni is  on top of a hill and still fortified by  ancient walls. As we arrived into the main square, Piazza della Liberta, the temperature on a clock was reading 24 degrees.  It was a perfect place to stop and enjoy a beer before walking our bikes up a very steep street away from the square to find our apartment.

As we arrived into Ostuni we could see it up on the hill! It is also known as the white city.

Piazza della Liberta with its statue of Sant Oronzo reputed to have saved Ostuni from the plague in 1657.The statue is looking after our bikes at the moment.

Working on the selfie but you get the idea. Two smiles and two beers, what more do you need?

Later we returned to the centro area and explored it on foot before settling on dinner at a local pub for some excellent organic beef hamburgers. We both agreed that it was a great day on the road!

In the evening, Carmine Church with Ostuni city in the background.
