To Pertuis
Well, I've gotten horribly behind so this will be sketchy. I'm actually writing it Sunday night, three nights later. This was a very short biking day, cut short by heavy rains. Before we began biking though, we spent about a half hour exploring the ruins above town. Our ride was for the most part quite easy - we continued our downstream glide for about 15k, but now along the Verdun (the Colestre empties into the Verdun at Greoux), until our route crossed the Durance. We then climbed away from the river for a few miles before dropping back near the Durance once more for more flat, downriver miles. All morning we were pushed briskly along by an east wind - apparently a reliable indicator of ill weather to come. We reached Pertuis about 10:30, just minutes before the sky opened up, the sidewalk vendors hurriedly closed up shop and people ran for cover.
After waiting over coffee hopefully at a café for nearly an hour, we gave up for the day and hunted for a hotel. We found an intriguing 15th century chateau, a good place to hide out from the storm and wait for better skies. (Ed: the journal doesn't do justice to this experience, which I still remember well. Rachael was pretty badly chilled when we found this place. It had an enormous dimly lit first floor with a flagstone floor, and we just wheeled our bikes in and leaned them against a wall deep in the room, in the shadows. We got Rachael settled into the room and under the covers, and then I went out to explore the town further.)
