The drive to New York state
Day Zero
Today was the 9 hour drive from Louisville, KY to start our trip in New York state. Our final destination is a Warmshowers host in a small community called Medina in New York state.
We left home about 8 a.m. and arrived in Cincinnati, OH about 9:30 a.m. and stopped at REI as I had some items to pick up. However, they didn't open until 10 a.m. so we decided to keep driving and go to the store in Columbus, OH instead.
Upon our arrival in Columbus, the first stop was the Nationwide Arena, home of the Blue Jackets ice hockey team where Cameron picked up another t shirt. After the obligatory photos, we headed over to REI to pick my last minute items. In the same parking lot we also found a Costco so had hot dogs and pizza for lunch.

After passing through relatively flat Ohio, we reached the I90 freeway and drove through Pennsylvania and into New York state. While driving along the Lake Erie shoreline we reminisced about last year's cycle tour around Lake Erie. Familiar place names popped up regularly on the freeway as exits to towns we had visited; Fairport, Ashtabula, Erie, Barcelona and Dunkirk to name a few.
We arrived in Buffalo, NY about 7 p.m. so stopped for dinner before driving the last 25 miles to our Warmshowers host in Medina, NY. As we drove through Medina we were able to see the Erie Canal Trail.
When we arrived, our hosts Mike and Gloria were busy working on their property. They are building a campground on their land and generously let us park the car there for two weeks and let us camp for the night. It was very hot and humid when we arrived but we were able to get showered and relatively cooled down before bedtime.
