Pfaffenhofen to Moosburg

Let's start with a video Janos made from yesterday's ride.

Now on to today, another sunny and mild October day! What luck we are having!

Yesterday the restaurant of Hotel Müllerbräu, that is the restaurant of the Müller brewery, was closed so today I was looking forward to breakfast in the dining room of this old building. The first thing which caught my eye were the old tiled stoves (the translation I found for Kachelofen, I have never heard of them in English), which were used for heating prior to central heating. The fire was made from an opening on the other side of the wall in the hallway and the tiles radiated enough warmth for the whole room.

Tiled stove - now just for decoration

Another tiled stove, and at the end of the string of rooms is where our bikes spend the night.

I took just a few pictures before we got on our bikes.

Again Hotel Müllerbräu

Enough of Müllerbraäu, time to get on the road. Today's ride was short but we had more climbing than yesterday, and with the hills prettier. We were out of Pfaffenhofen quickly and soon had vistas with fields of hops poles. We had some unpaved bits and a stretch of road under construction in the beginning, otherwise smooth sailing all day.

Fields and hops poles

Most of the dirt surface was easy to ride.

Between the fields were stretches of woods.

I guess I like the looks of fields with hops poles. I took many pictures of them.

Here I had to stop to look at the many mushrooms sprouting on the roadside.

I can only identify a few mushrooms. I have no idea what these are.
Heart 6 Comment 1
Bill ShaneyfeltI've no idea, but doing a lot of internet searching, maybe some kind of a bonnet mushroom?

I wonder if it's edible.

Macrolepiota procera or parasol mushroom is one of the few mushrooms I can identify. It is edible and we saw enough of these for a meal.

Bill ShaneyfeltI remember the "Parasol" from when I was in Germany. They can get pretty big.

Pretty fungi I thought.

Bill ShaneyfeltNice! I hesitate to ID fungi because they are so variable and so many edibles have poisonous look-alikes. That said, this looks like turkey tail.

When I was in Germany in the mid 1970s one of our German co workers who had been a mushroomer since he was a little kid was teaching me about them... He related a story about a guy who asked "Herr Bohn, what mushrooms can you eat?" To which, Herr Bohn replied: "Oh! You can eat ALL mushrooms... (pause) Some only... ONCE!" :-)

The "cardinal rule" of wild edibles is: "When in doubt, DON'T!"

Suzanne GibsonTo Bill ShaneyfeltIn Munich in the 60s on Monday morning there was a "Pilzdoktor" at Elizabeth Platz. After a weekend of mushrooming people would show him the mushrooms they weren't sure of.

Kirsten KaarsooTo Suzanne GibsonThat is such a practical thing. I like that the pharmacists in France can identify mushrooms for you. Or at least they used to.

I am really enjoying your stunning photos. You have captured fall in Germany beautifully.

We passed a few chapels again today.

We hadn't ridden far, but too far to turn back, when we realized we had forgotten to shop for a picnic. We had every intention of not repeating yesterday's mistake, but we did. But today we were luckier and around 11:30 we passed a bakery. It was still kind of early but we seized the opportunity and had coffee/tea and cake and also bought sandwiches to take with us just to be on the safe side. Later in the day we passed a Lidl and a Penny. This time we were not punished for our forgetfulness.

Making up for yesterday

Hops from the Hallertau - we are no longer in Upper Bavaria but in the Hallertau where the best hops are grown.

What is underfoot today? Apples

Last stop before we reached Moosburg was a church in Feldkirchen that Janos read was noteworthy. Unfortunately the doors were locked.

Sun dial on the wall of the church - pretty accurate. It was 2:17 on my watch.

Kirsten KaarsooKurbis, ( I am not sure how to get the dots when on the computer) One of the few German words I know as they eat a lot of it in the fall.

Suzanne GibsonA good word to know - we do eat a lot of it! Btw, to spell a word correctly you can always substitute ue for ü, also ae for ä and oe for ö.

We had the code for a key box and could let ourselves in when we arrived at our hotel Moosburger Hof, but actually Hotel Mythos with a Greek restaurant where we had dinner. But before I say good night, Janos has a video from today for you.

Oops, I made a mistake. This is the same video as the one at the top. Can't delete it.

I'll try again. Success!

Suzanne GibsonTo Bill ShaneyfeltSame here. Intrigued and many photos. But they are really hard to photograph half buried in leaves and moss in dark forest and sometimes so tiny. Much patience and time is needed.
