Day 78 - Hells Canyon & chocolate milk

Last night in Cambridge I stopped into The Office bar to have a cold draft and visit Buck. Buck is the bar dog who will accept a buck, bring it around the bar to the bartender as a tip and then he gets a treat

Here is Buck in front of my knees at the bar getting plenty of scratches

Here is Buck taking my buck. Around the bar he went, gave the dollar to the bartender and got his treat

The Devil went down to Oregon
He was lookin’ for a soul to steal
He was in a bind ‘cause he was way behind and he was willing to make a deal
When he came across this young man peddling a bike and lookin real cool
And the Devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said, “Boy, let me tell you what”
“I guess you didn't know it, but I’m a bike rider too
And if you’d care to take a dare I’ll make a bet with you
Now you ride a pretty good bike, boy, but give the Devil his due
I’ll bet a race through Hells Canyon against your soul ‘cause I think I’m better than you”

The man said, “My name’s David, and it might be a sin,
But I’ll take your bet; you’re gonna regret ‘cause I’m the best there’s ever been”
The devil chased David and never caught his bike
In the end he bowed his head because he knew that he’d been beat
David said, “Devil, just come on back, if you ever wanna try again,
I done told you once, you son of a bitch, I’m the best that’s ever been”

View down Hells Canyon. The Snake River at this point is a reservoir due to a dam

Crossed into my last state today!

The Brownlee dam is quite remote so the Idaho power company provides housing for those who work at the power generation plant

After I left Missoula and crossed into northern Idaho and entered Pacific time. Only the little skinny northern section of Idaho is on Pacific time. I then peddled south in Idaho and entered Mountain time again. Today when I entered Oregon I crossed over once again to Pacific time

As a long distance runner for decades, I knew one of the best recovery drinks after a long run was chocolate milk. The same idea applies to a long bike ride. If I can find it, I drink a quart of chocolate milk after completing the days ride

Steve ClarkI think Mr. Daniels would be pleased with your lyrics and if he was still alive I’m sure he’d sing it for us.
