Hegben Lake is northwest of Yellowstone and was formed by damming up the Madison river. On April 17, 1959 a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck with epicenter at the lake. A huge landslide was triggered that had so much debris moving downhill it generated 100 mph winds ahead of it. The landslide choked off the Madison River just downstream from Hegben Lake resulting in 28 deaths and the formation of Earthquake Lake.

Elizabeth HendersonWow, that is a big landslide! And even after all these years, the slide is still so visible!
