Dennis took pannier bags on his bike, contrived out of army-surplus haversacks, which many of us kids would normally use for carrying books to school. I had an old-fashioned saddle bag. The first few miles of the route we knew from weekend rides. After Thirsk we were in unknown territory and it started to rain. We found temporary shelter under the eaves of a farm building and were back on the road after half an hour. We were carrying cycle capes, but given the choice we’d avoid the rain. Riding downhill towards the river in Ripon town centre, a delivery van and my bike challenged for space. I lost a small amount of skin on my right hand.. We were entering the Yorkshire Dales region, now a national park. We had some climbing to do, from the valley of the Ure [Wensleydale] into that of the Nidd. Shortly after our arrival at the YH I met my first hitch-hiker. He’d made his way up from London, the last few yards on the back of a postman’s bike.
Today's ride: 92 km (57 miles)
Total: 92 km (57 miles)
