To Colfax WA
Recovery day
My legs are cranky after yesterday’s ride to Steptoe Butte. We had ambitions for a 40 mile ride today to camp in Kamiak Butte County Park and hike up the butte tomorrow morning. That’s not happening because (a) see above and (b) it’ll be another cold night, down to 40F with a good chance of rain. There’s a perfectly good motel room available in Colfax so that’s the destination for today.
Colfax is just 11 miles away on US 195, but we take a quieter route, starting west on WA 23 through Steptoe and swinging south on Green Hollow Road. The rolling green Palouse hills dominate the landscape until we drop to the south fork of the Palouse River and ride through a forest of fir trees.

There are enough hills to make it a meaningful ride, albeit a short one. A light rain starts just as we pull into Colfax and get to Serfes Foods for an excellent lunch before they close at 2.
Down the road at the unassuming Siesta Motel we have the biggest motel room I’ve ever stayed in - a spacious one-bedroom apartment for a modest $85, tax included. Amazing deal. It’s just what we needed to chill out, take a nap and give our legs a break. Barry volunteers to pick up Chinese takeout from Eddy’s place across the street and I never have to leave the place. We’ll be back in action tomorrow.
Today's ride: 18 miles (29 km)
Total: 763 miles (1,228 km)
