Twizel to Mt Cook: Spectacular!!!
Today we rode form Twizel to Mt Cook village, 60km. There is not much here because it is in a national park not unlike Banff and Jasper only smaller. There is the Hermitage Hotel that has existed in some form or other since the 1800s. There is an exhibit to Sir Edmond Hillary who spent a lot of time here and trained for his assault on Everest on Mt Cook. The weather improved dramatically as the day unfolded so we had some magnificent views of the valley and the mountains. The weather was cool but nice for riding. Along the way we stopped for a short visit at a lavender field. As we got closer to the mountains there was a head wind coming off the mountains but nothing too serious. Mt Cook also known as Aoraki in Maori and is the tallest mountain in Australasia and attracts many climbers each year. It is dangerous mountain due to the rapidly variable weather conditions and it has climbed many lives. It is in the clouds most of the time but we did manage to get a photo of almost all of it just before sundown. We also have a nice photo of Mt Sefton and the glacier field. We are again staying in some very comfortable A frame huts in the village but these are a step up from the others. More photos later
