Klusserath to Trier

A fixed dérailleur and a soft bed.

August 29 Monday

Klusserath to Trier

54 kilometres

A quickish start. Young ones haven’t stirred. The road to Trier is flat and fast. We don’t cycle back over the bridge but find a swift path along the river. The distance to Trier is relatively short and we’re aiming for lunchtime.

Bakery stop to start the day.

We begin to pass industry but also lots of moorings for small boats. The bells are tolling midday as we enter Trier and spot our Canadian friends. We have have a brief catch-up.

Camping on the river.

We decide to try youth hostel- no chance- schools visiting. I see one teacher managing a  large number of yr 9 students. This city is possibly of interest to study of Roman settlement as it has a significant Roman history.

We find  hotel Feilen Wolff just over river. It’s an old established looking place on a busy road but quiet once inside. We have a large spacious room. A good example of the best kind of European hospitality. And a large garage for bikes.

Heading into town we cycle down a tree lined avenue to get Ann’s gears fixed near the Hauptbahnhof. It’s a fortuitous choice of place as they fix her derailleur  right away. No three week wait, as the young German/American (Air Force father) tells us. Ann is pleased with her derailleur- had been bent en route or on plane.

We then walk/cycle the town- the Protestant basilica is beautiful and very plain. Once Constantine’s palace, it has undergone several renovations until its present simple uncluttered open space. The Catholic cathedral by contrast is a mix of styles and a little overdone in places, though it too has some beautiful gothic features.

Hard to conceive from below, but each beam is 3 metres across.

There are crowds in the centre around the towering Porta Nigra in 30 degree heat, so we do not linger, but are impressed.

Back to hotel for peace and dinner bought at local Lidl. We’re not big on Lidl but sometimes a Lidl goes a long way and we find enough salad salmon and bread for a sumptuous feast. A soft bed is no substitute for a roll mat, the hard ground and a pillow case stuffed with your clothes but we’re not complaining .

Today's ride: 54 km (34 miles)
Total: 370 km (230 miles)
