Day 3

Beach time

The day started late, having had a good recovery sleep-in.  After eating I packed up my sleeping bag, filled my water container and set out on my bike to see if I could find any good places to hunt lizards & such.  I rode all over the fringes of Ventura for a couple hours, and having failed to find any good spots, gave up and returned to the beach in the afternoon.  More beach combing for an hour or so turned up nothing interesting except some leathery looking pod like things that years later I learned were ray egg cases.  Another doomed sand castle was constructed with a moat for protection, which proved to be of no value resisting the rising ocean tide.

After supper, camp fires sprung up again all along the beach.  One nearby was attended to by some loud, boisterous happy guys drinking too much beer, yelling and laughing.  The apparent leader pulled some firecrackers out of his pocket and started throwing them one at a time into the fire, yelling “Sandy Kofax pitches a shutout!” The panic stricken group sprung away, evacuating as firecrackers exploded, blowing burning embers high into the surrounding air.  I thought it might be a good idea to move far away to set up for the night.  Sleep was again delightful with the light sea breeze.
