Wurzburg: A perfect day of cycle touring
To-day's riding was cycling touring at its very best. The track was almost perfect, at no time did the signage let us down, once the fog lifted the sun shone and there was great variety. What more could you ask for.
On our way to Germunden, our first coffee stop, there was a bridge out of action the alternative was a ferry and because of the bridge it was free of charge. By this time the fog had lifted so we were able to drink our coffee outside guarding the bikes. Just out of town we came upon two tractors pulling caravans to take their owners on holiday, I hope this isn't giving Ken ideas
Today was a day of harvesting we saw potatoes and corn being harvested. Up in the slopes where there were intermittent vineyards and harvesting was in full progress. There were lots of people involved and down on the track we could hear the laughing and talking - it made me feel a little sad that we have experienced this for the last time. On these steep vineyards transporting the grapes is a problem. How this happens is that there are men with enormous plastic bins on their backs. The pickers tip their grapes into these and then the transporters carry them to the bottom of the hill. What an awful back breaking job
The river bank on the way into Wurzburg has been so well looked after. There is play equipment both for children and adults, a running track and sports fields. Everything is perfectly looked after. Coming into Wurzburg was a joyous occasion we came over the old stone bridge on this sunny Saturday- it was packed with people enjoying the wine festival and the whole crowd seemed happy. Not too much trouble to find our comfortable hotel. I think Ken has sorted out another Wirsthause for tonight
