Nogent le Rotrou: A much better day
Last evening we ate at the hotel and the meal was one of the most delicious I have ever eaten. I started with a salad of fresh tomatoes from the chefs garden, they tasted different from any other tomatoes I have tasted, then the tenderest of veal followed by my favorite crème brûlée. Now that doesn't sound spectacular but it was. A really fantastic hotel in a rather ordinary but pleasant little town
As we rode along today Ken said 'This is much more like the delights of cycling in France'. The endless rather monotonous cereal plains of the previous couple of days were behind us and the relentless wind had dropped to a mere breeze. This had been replaced now by hills but they really didn't cause either of us too much problem particularly after my grabbing front brakes (a left over from yesterday's puncture) were sorted. Now there were patches of forest, some of the fields had animals in them and there were many more flowers in the villages.
We came to Thiron-Gardais which has a spectacular Abbey. What delighted us most however was the PMU. It was buzzing with life, we felt that if we sat there much longer we would see the entire population of the town and surroundings, the coffee was excellent as well.
A massive Brocard was under way at Nogent. It is by far the largest I have seen and now at 5.30 the are just beginning to pack up and the music still floods into our room which is just above it. Ken spent time inspecting the eclectic array of goods and thinks about 90% of them will go home again but everyone has certainly had a good time
