Nevers
We had a lovely meal last night in the Restaurant across the road from the hotel. It is built out over the river I had a terrine to start followed by Tete de Veau then Creme Bruelle. Ken had chosen a bottle of Sancerre Rouge and we both enjoyed it.
The Hotel de la Loire is old and extremely elegant. The breakfast this morning was a typical French Breakfast. We sat a a table not with a paper cloth but with a crisp linen one - I had to take great care not to put a drop of coffee on it as I was thinking of all the ironing Madam had to do
Todays ride was largely through agricultural country and most of the time on very good paths next to the river. There were very few little villages and when we eventually got to one after about 35km the only bar was shut because it was Monday. Both of us had been hanging out for a coffee and a bit of a rest. We just pushed on.
When we came to the Allier there is another one of those marvellous bridges taking the canal over it. Again it was about 300m long, too narrow to ride on but we had a good view of the people having fun in the Allier below. From here to Never it is all Canal riding. First along the Canal Lateral to the Loire until it joined the small side branch into Nevers. We are staying at the Mercure which is just over the bridge on the banks of the river. It is a comfortable hotel and after riding almost non stop for 70km we both felt pretty tired.
