Another windy day.

It was forecasted to be a sunny, hot windy day.  We got up early and we were on the road by 5:30.  We had 50 miles on the route today, trying to get to Glendive, Mt.  The past two days we have been moving from the hi line, hwy 2 northern route to south east to the I-94 corridor.  We will stay near the I-94 corridor all across North Dakota until Fargo.  Today’s destination of Glendive is on I-94.  The route was a 1000 foot climb for the first 15 miles and then a 1000 foot decent all the way to Glendive.  Normally this would be a great elevation profile, get the climb out of the way in the first part of the ride while we are fresh and then coast it all the way to the destination.  However, today we fought a head wind from mile one until the end of the ride.  The second part of the ride was easier, but, we still had to fight the wind and were tired by the time we completed  the ride.

There was one town on the route, Lindsey, which was after 28 miles.  It had a gas station that had mostly car items and a couple snacks and drinks.  We got some cold drinks and had a quick break before re-starting our ride.  We got into Glendive about 12:30.  We headed to a burger joint to get a quick lunch and then headed over to the hotel.

Today was the last of a multiple day push to get to the I-94 corridor.  The next couple of days we are planning lower mile days and in a few days we are going to take a rest day.  We are a bit worn out from the windy, sunny, hot days and really need a break.  Tomorrow we have a 30 mile day to the town of Wibaux.  We will have to climb 1500 feet over the 30 miles so it won’t be an easy day, but, it should be a short day.

Early morning start

George (Buddy) HallYou are almost out of Montana, and then North Dakota is similar as far as being in the High Plains. But the winds change and it will be your friend again. The winds seemed to be against us all through North Dakota as we’re heading west, and then they’ve been friendly since we got in Montana. So you never know. Sorry we missed you guys, best of luck as you continue eastward. Here’s a special tip; in Oxford Junction, IA, go into the bar and ask for Donna, the owner- she can arrange for you to sleep in the community center with A/C and running water instead of camping in the park with only a porta-potty. They do it all the time for cyclists, but it’s not listed on the ACA map. Best of luck,

Buddy Hall
