Pre-tour Sevilla explorations

A great city to bike in and around

After three days of epic rains, and even hail yesterday, the sun made a strong appearance today. Yesterday I explored western exits from the city, today I went south and did a loop. Going west towards Huelva, one must climb the Aljarafe bench, unless you really want to add many many kilometers. There’s about 2 km of a busy road (A8077) without a bike lane or shoulder. It’s a steep little bugger too. But, this is Spain not the USA. There was some traffic but it wasn’t bad, and everyone gave me room when they passed. The crux moving is over in 10-15 minutes. You see a bridge cross the A8077 just below the crest of the hill. Bear right up a double digit ramp, and the bike path comes in from the left.

Unfortunately, that path from the left starts in a little housing project, and doesn’t offer any alternative connections to Sevilla. Going south, you follow the Triana cycle path and then cross another branch of the Guadalquivir River, picking up A8058 going south to Coria del Rio. There are a few km of four lane road, but there’s a decent shoulder, and all vehicles were respectful. I saw many other cyclists here

After a desayuno (2nd of the day for me) stop, corrals and a sandwich, I took the cute and rather rustic ferry across the main branch of the river. Cost is 1.5 euros. Deposited on the east bank, you ride empty roads for several kilometers through farmland. I had wanted to do a longer loop, but Google suggested that there was a road through that flooded field you see in one picture. Sure..

I returned to Sevilla on the A685. And like clockwork, as soon as I hit the city limits, a bike path appeared. Sevilla has done a great job with infrastructure. Signage would be good, as there are several tracks one can take once you get closer to the centro.

Pretty basic flat boat. Every vehicle scrapped bottom getting onto and off
