Bags are packed, am ready to go
My original plan had been to convert my Moots into a travel bike using a Z-coupling system, per discussion with Tamil (middle aged man in Lycra) on Discord. The shop on the East Coast that was doing the work could do z-couplings. The process took six months, don't ask. It was painful.
When I got it back, I practiced assembling and disassembling, as I wanted to be able to do this alone in the field in a cramped hotel room with dim lighting. I learned that the arthritis in my right hand, due to a cross-country ski fall the previous winter, really decreased my strength. The crux move was inserting a small cotter pin to secure the hydraulic brake cable coupling. I didn't have the strength to hold it. My wonderful bike mechanic, Joe, saw the difficulty I was having, and couldn't suggest a decent option. A third-hand brake tool wouldn't work as the cable was flexible.
So,I abandoned the idea of using the coupling set-up for this trip. I called Moots for their suggestions on a bike case. They recommended Scicon, which is what you see in the pictures. I did call Scion to provide feedback. The seat cover wasn't generous enough to fit my Brooks saddle, and the two skewers provided to affix the bike to the frame were each a tad short. Another 1/2 inch (1 cm) each would do the trick.
Off to the airport shortly. The next post will be from Sevilla.
