Gettin' Hitched in the Rathaus: Day 31 - Regensberg to Straubing
We have a few short days ahead of us. A good friend of K's sister and husband lives in Linz and we'd like to get together with them. However, they're on holiday and won't be back until the next Monday. That means we're going on slo-mo for a few days so we will hit Linz on Monday. That's our official excuse.
The reality is we kind of like putzing along, and the way my head felt this morning, well... we didn't get a real early start.
We did however spend the morning checking out Regensberg. It's a beautiful medieval city, largely intact.
Thursday must be wedding day as we saw several ceremonies throughout the city including several at the Rathaus (city hall). Most of the wedding parties were kitted out in traditional Bavarian dress and it was quite nice to see that tradition. Several pics follow to show what it's like.
One party I didn't get a picture of looked like a more traditional catholic group. Bride in white, and about 8.9 months pregnant ... just making it in under the wire!
We had a short day to Straubing, nothing exciting, just good cycling along the river. We had another Bavarian experience at lunch though. We left it quite late to eat and we were in a fairly small village with just one Gasthaus open. We're doing pretty good with German menus now but this one had us stumped ... rolled the dice and we ended up with a plate full of cold sliced pork, horseradish and bread. Good, but not great for cycling afterwards!
We also paid a visit to Valhalla ... basically a reconstruction of the Acropolis in a country park about 15 km out of Regensberg. Very much like Chambord in France, it struck us as another colossal waste of money and basically a demonstration of power and privilege by the monarchy. Enough said.
Good campsite in Straubing with quite a few other cyclists and a few long distance walkers as well.
Another shortish day tomorrow and then Passau and a day off.

Song of the Day:
Dance Me to The End Of Love covered by The Civil Wars
This is for all the couples we saw getting married today. One of my favorite Leonard Cohen songs, and a very tender rendition by The Civil Wars, although the back story to what inspired him to write it is a bit chilling ...
